30 Fairmont Park Lane S What’s in a name? An August 17th article titled, “Saskatchewan protestors target nuclear waste plans” indicates there are concerns over the federal Nuclear Waste Management Organization’s (NWMO) investigation of a possible storage sites for Canada’s used nuclear fuel. Dr. Peter Ottensmeyer, Professor Emeritus, University of Toronto, has recently noted that Canada’s 40,000 tonnes of used nuclear fuel could be used in fast reactors to produce $36 trillion worth of electricity. Calling this valuable material “waste” seems a serious misnomer? The article reports that three communities in Saskatchewan, the village of Pinehouse, English River First Nation and the township of Creighton have applied to be considered as spent fuel storage sites. The forward looking initiative these communities have taken to be involved in the stewardship of this national treasure is admirable. Yours truly, Duane Pendergast
